Overall, amongst five age groups including 17-to 26-years-olds, 27-to 36-years-olds, 37-to 46-years-olds, 47-to 54-years-olds and 55-to 64-years-olds , 55-to 64-years-olds group was most popular age group that people living alone, with special year witnessed in 2000 . Meanwhile, 17-to 26-years-olds group was not recorded in 1850, and three of the rest age group showed the same percentage.

As can be seen from the chart, in 1850, about 3% of people in the oldest group were celibate citizens, compared to approximately 2.5% of people in 37-46 and 47-54 groups respectively. In that year, no data were recorded for two other younger groups.

From 1900 to 2000, a single life became more popular amongst 55-to 64-year-olds, with their figure increasing to a peak of around 17%. In only one century, the proportion of 47-to 54-years-old rocketed from under 4% to nearly 13%, compared to with a slower rise of 4% in the figure for 37-46 group in the same period time. Besides, the bar chart showed less significant increase, reaching 8% and nearly 5% of people aged 27-to 36-year-olds and 17-to 26-year-olds in the year 2000.
