The given bar chart illustrates the turnover in dollars from sales of virtual games for four different platforms, namely mobile phones, online games, consoles games and handheld games.
Overall, handheld games have consistently gained the highest turnover and the increase in sales of the three other form of games leads to a significant rise in total global turnover. Revenue generated by handheld games were at least double those of any other platform.
In 2000, the sales figure for handheld games stood at around $11 billion, while console games made slightly under $6 billion. No figures was given for mobile or online gaming in that year. For the next three-year period, sales of handheld computer games increased by about $4 million, but that of console games saw a different pattern with a decrease of nearly $2. Mobile phone and online games started to gain popular, with sales reaching $3 million in 2003.
In 2006, sales of handheld, online and mobile games reached peaks of 17, 9 and 7 billion dollars respectively. Console gaming revenue, in contrast, hit a record-low of roughly $2.5 billion.
