The chart and table below give information about population figures in Japan.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The graph and table provide information about the population of Japan. While the graph represents the trend of the population from 1950 to 2055, the table illustrates the count and percentage of the people aged 65 or above over 4 periods (1950,2005,2035,2055).

Overall, the population of Japan was highest at 2005 while the lowest was recorded in 1950. On the other hand, it is observed that the number of individuals aged 65 or above was less in 1950 and expected to be highest in 2055 in the given range.

Considering the population trend, in 1950 there were 84.1 million while the figure gradually increased and reached its peak of 127.8 million in 2005. Although the numbers were relatively stable till 2015, it is expected to drop suddenly to reach 89.9 million in 2025.

Regarding citizens aged 65 or above, the least percentage (4.9%) was in 1950 with 4.1 million out of 84.1 million. Afterward, there was an upward trend and is predicted to reach its best figures in 2055 accounting for 41% of the inhabitants (36 million out of 89.9 million).
