The bar chart illustrate the proportions of families possessing and hiring dwellings in England and Wales during the period of 1918-2011. In general, the first half of the period witnessed the higher percentage of families owning housing than that of those hiring accommodation while the situation was reversed in the last half of the period.
To be more specific, in 1918, over 75 per cent of the households possessed residences while only well over 20 per cent of them rented dwellings. Similar patterns were observed during the period of the next 43 years, with the proportion of families possessing accommodation decreasing to just below 60 per cent and that of those hiring residences increasing to slightly above 40 per cent. In 1971, the figures for both types of households were equal to each other at 50 per cent.
From 1981 to 2001, the rate of families possessing accommodation amounted from 60 per cent to just under 70 per cent while the number for those renting dwellings dwindled from 40 per cent to slightly over 30 per cent. In 2011, the proportion of households owning residences was around 65 per cent whereas that of those renting accommodation was virtually 35 per cent.
