the chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England ans Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of the families residing in owned and rented houses in England and Wales over the course of 93 years starting in 1918.
As can be seen from the chart, while the percentages in the number of households living in owned houses recorded an upward trend, that of people staying in rented accommodation went through a downward pattern throughout the survey.
In particular, the percentage of households living in their own place stood at over 20% at the beginning of the survey. The next 53 years witnessed an over two fold increase in the number when it reached 50% in 1971. By contrast, the majority of the households lived in the rented accommodation, at about 80% in 1918. The figure then decreased steadily when it settled down at the same level of the number of citizens residing in owned houses in 1971.
Regarding the next half surveyed years, the percentage of people renting a house registered a gradual fall, when it stood at 30% in 2001 before increasing slightly by 5% in the next year. Meanwhile, there was a marked rise in the number of people owning a house, when it reached its peak at nearly 70% in 2004 before falling slightly to 65% in the last year. Interestingly, while the gap between two sectors was bridged in the first half of the survey, it was then widened in the following years, when the figure for people owing homes almost doubled that of households renting accommodation.
