As can be seen in the diagram, the percentage of rented accommodation from 1918 to 2001 decreases from 78% to 31% while the figure for owned accommodation increases from 23% to 69% in the same period before these categories swap their trend from 2001 to 2011.
Looking at the diagram in more detail, the percentage of rented housing decreases from 79% to 68% from 1918 to 1939 and maintains the same number until 1953 before dropping to 50% in 1971. From 1981 to 2001, the number continues to drop from 40% to 31% before making a little gain to 36% in 2011.
The figure for owned accommodation rises from 23% to 32% from 1918 to 1939 and maintains the number until 1953. Then the percentage increases steadily from 41% to 67% between 1961 and 1991 before reaching its peak in 2001 at 69% then dropping back to 64% in 2011.
