These two charts illustrate marriage and divorce figures as well as the marital status of Americans between 1970 and 2000. Overall, the marital status of American citizens in 2000 was not as optimistic as that of three decades ago.
According to the first graph, there were 2,5 million of marriages in both 1970 and 1980 and this figure decreased slightly during the next two decades until reaching 2 million in 2000. By comparison, the number of divorced residents in the USA first increased from 1 million in 1970 to approximately 1,4 million in 1980 but then slowly dropped back to 1 million in 2000.
As can be seen from the second bar chart, the percentage of married American adults declined by 10% from 1970 to 2000. Meanwhile, the adults who never married accounted for about 15% in 1970 and by 2000, this portion had risen by 5%. The proportion of the widowed registered a minor fall during the given period, reaching over 6% in 2000. In contrast, the percentage of divorced adults showed an upward trend between 1970 and 2000
