The bar charts show data about the number of marriages and divorces from 1970 to 2000, and the adults' marital status in the United States in two points of time. Overall, the rate of marriage nearly doubled that of divorce almost all the time surveyed. In addition, the percentages of married adults accounted for the largest part among all marital status in both 1970 and 2000.
In 1970, the marriage rate was 2.5 higher than the divorces one, reaching 2.5 millions and 1 million respectively. The gap between these two figures narrowed in 1980, as the former remained the same as in 1970, while the latter increased to about 1.8 millions. From 1980 to 2000, there was a gradual decline in both the number of marriages and divorces, reaching their lowest points at 2 millions and 1 million in 2000.
The marital status of American adults varied in 1970 and 2000. The percentage of married adults in 2000 dropped by 10% compared to 1970, from 70% to 60%. By contrast, the proportion of those never married went up from approximately 15% to 20%. The 2000 witnessed a slight fall in the percentage of widowed adults compared to 1970, while there was an increase in the proportion of divorced people from about 2% to 9%.
