Coal consumption by sectors in the UK in million tonnes

A glance at the provided table illustrates the information about the use of coal in the UK (in million tones) from 1975 to 2000 classified by four different sectors. In general, it is clearly apparent that the usage of coal both in all sectors and in total decreased gradually. However, power stations burned coal the most compared to the other spheres while services purpose consumed the least.

Looking in more detail from the table, in 1975, the expenditure of coal for power stations reached 77.2 million tonnes. Although it rose at 89.6 in the next five years, the figures started to decline gently in 1985 until 47.1 million tonnes in 2000. On the other hand, the other sectors which used coal much lower than power stations at the beginning of the period showed significant downward pattern since 1980. The domestic part which reported as the second highest coal consumer at 20.2 million tonnes in 1975 showed a dramatically decrease by nine tenth in 2000. Similarly, industrial coal intake which documented at 19.6 million tonnes in 1975 dropped considerably at 3.2 in two and half decades. Finally, coal used for services also felt year by year from 4.2 to 0.6 million tonnes.
