The provided diagram gives details on the life cycle of the salmon fish.
Overall, the total life cycle of this fish species lasts for approximately ten years. During this period, salmon changes three habitats, as it matures and grows.
The life cycle begins with the fish eggs, spawned by mature fishes. They lay these eggs in the upper-river areas, where the water moves slowly. The eggs, sheltered by reed and small rocks, need 5-6 months before fry hatches. Fry are baby salmons with 3-8 cm in diameter.
Fry swim to the shallow parts of the river, with fast-flowing waters. They remain in this environment for around four years. During this time, fry develop into smolt, which can be described as a young salmon. At this stage, the diameter of the fish is between 12 cm and 15 cm.
After four years in downstream parts of the river, smolts swim to the open sea, where they remain for another five years. During this time, fishes reach adulthood, growing to over 70 cm in diameter. These fertile, adult fishes swim back to the upper river area to lay new eggs, staring another life cycle.
