The diagram provides the information about generation of electricity in a hydroelectric power station.
Overall, among very few sustainable energy resources, water is used to run this kind of station to generate electricity. Power generation occurs when water flows through the turbine and causing it to rotate thereby, the generator coupled with the turbine harness this force to produce electricity.
First, hydroelectric power station uses the man-made structures like dams to store water in a higher altitude, and the power stations are located in relatively lower altitude. River water is stored in dams are directed into the power station through an intake, which faciliates the flow of water towards and away from the station. During the day water flows to the lower altitude whereas, in nights water flows to the high-level reservoirs.
In the low lying power station, water flowing from high-level reservoirs helps the turbine to rotate and this rotation aids the generator with electricity generation, later the electricity is transported elsewhere by power lines to the national grids.
