The diagram shows the skeletal systems of two ancestors of modern human beings

Essay topics:

The diagram shows the skeletal systems of two ancestors of modern human beings.

The diagram illustrates the information through which the skeletal systems of two early types of human are compared. Overall, we can see that Australopithecus afarensis had a wider body and much longer arms than Homo erectus that was slimmer and had more functionally-developed joints of skeleton.

Beginning with the upper half of body part, Australopithecus afarensis, having a more unbalanced head with longer snout, had a much broader chest and waist than homo erectus, making it a more circular appearance. The former had much larger hands: the longer arms, higher and more narrow shoulders, which would have been useful for climbing trees.

Turning to the lower half of the body, we can see that Homo erectus had proportionately and longer-suited legs and larger hip, knee and ankle joints. Their feet were also smaller and more arched, with more enlarged heelbones and shorter toes, in comparison with the other one. These meant that this human type would be more appropriate suited to long-distance running.

To sum up, there are significant changes in the earlier humans development. The physical differences are clearly related to differences in the lifestyles of tree climbers and endurance runners.
