The picture illustrates how the horse has evolved starting from circa 40 million years ago.
In general, the evolutionary process has three main stages. The body shape and foot structure have experienced a significant transformation.
As can be seen in the picture, the ancestor of the horse called Eohippus, living 40 million years ago, had a small head, a humpback and an undeveloped tail. Its feet had four toes with ankle joints that had not evolved yet. After 10 million years, Mesohippus, known as the next generation of Eohippus, had become bigger with a longer head and neck, a bigger body, and more hair in its tail and mane. In the period, there were 3 toes and gradually developed foot bones.
In the third stage, Merychippus had not witnessed considerable changes, with a slight increase in its height, and its feet had been more evolutionary advanced. Finally, the modern horse has had the most complete body shape and a fully formed mane and tail. Also, the feet have changed to sole hoof and developed joints.
