The picture describes the evolution of horses over a period of 40 million years.

In general, the transformation process of the horse can be divided into 3 main stages. Furthermore, the horse foot’s structure has gone through several modifications.

Regarding changes to the body, at the beginning period, Eohippus's appearance was simplistic with a hairless back and an undeveloped small body. After 10 million years, it evolved to Mesohippus with a longer face, back, limbs and tails. Another noticeable is that it had also developed its form of mane. These attributes developed continuously in the next 15 years when the animal was changed its name to Meryhippus. Finally, the appearance of the modern horse transformed slightly compared to Meryhippus where its body parts became more evolutionarily advanced. Specifically, both its mane and hind legs are bigger while the face, the back, and the tail become more sharped.

Considering changes around the foot structure, the Eohippus had small and short limbs forking into four smaller jointed toes at the end. These toes had been innovated and reduced to three in the middle of evolution stages, 15 million years ago. Moreover, it can be seen that the size of the tip of the biggest toe started to increase and protruded to the front. Lastly, the horse’s foot developed its form completely by replacing its toes with a single hoof.
