The graph above illustrates how eating different sweet foods affects the acid creation in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. The X-axis shows us the time when the normal acid level returns and The Y-axis displays the pH level.
Firstly, it can be seen, that sweets consumption has an unhealthy influence on teeth for a small period of time. According to the given type of sweet, it is easy to notice that cane sugar has the worst influence on teeth, because it causes the biggest plunge of pH degree from 7 to almost 3,5 in the first 5 minutes after eating and in order to come to normal level it takes a little more than 30 minutes.
Relating to other kinds of sweets, fruit sugar, and honey have less harmful effects on teeth, raising acidity to a bit more than 4 and almost 5 pH respectively in the first 5 minutes after consumption. Moreover, both of them take significantly less time to return to healthy pH level, 15 minutes it requires after eating honey, and it needs 20 minutes after fruit sugar.
In summary, various sweets that consist of different contents of simple carbohydrates may be a reason to influence harmfully teeth to a certain degree. Our chart shows that cane sugar has the most harmful effect, while honey consumption is more tolerable.
