El Nino is the name of a warm ocean current that affects weather patterns on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. The diagrams compare normal conditions in the Pacific with El Nino conditions.

The diagram compares the weather patterns in the Pacific Ocean, one with the impacts of El Nino and the other without. Overall, El Nino affects the environment negatively; causing several disturbances in natural phenomena, such as changes in winds’ direction.

Under normal conditions, strong trade winds blow from the East, causes warm water to travel westwards. Besides, weak winds in the West Pacific also blow eastward and storm clouds make rainfall in this region. These features create rainy and cloudy weather in Australia, which help nourishing vegetation well . Cool water rises and more nutrients are available in the ocean of the Eastern area, hence, the amount of fish increases under the sunny weather of Peru.

Regarding El Nino conditions, most of the phenomena above are reversed. Strong winds blow from the West and weak trade winds begin in the East. These abnormal directions of blowing push warm water to the east and cool water are trapped in the bottom of the ocean floor; the nutrients are also inadequate. Consequently, droughts occurred in Australia and too much rain in Peru makes marine life suffers.
