The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household The second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use

The first pie chart illustrates energy consumption for different purposes in Australia and the second pie chart compares the proportion of greenhouse gas emissions from such things.

Overall, an average Australian household uses the most energy for heating compared to cooling which takes up the least proportion of energy. However, greenhouse gas is emitted most by water heating while cooling contributes the least to the emissions.

Heating is the largest consumer of energy in Australia, comprising 42% of the total energy consumption, while it only involves in 15% of greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, water heating, the second biggest energy consumer (30%), is the greatest source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 32%.

Households in Australia use 7% and 4% of energy for refrigeration and lighting respectively, but only 3% for cooling, making it the smallest energy consumer. The same pattern can be found in their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions as well, with 14% by refrigeration, 8% by lighting, and a mere 3% by cooling. Although other appliances consume just 15% of energy, their emissions make up 28%.
