The provided chart illustrates the proportion of US residents living alone in 5 various age groups from 1850 to 2000.

It is clear that people aged 55-64 always had the highest percentage of living alone during the research period. Additionally, all five age groups saw the increasing trend in the rate of US citizens living alone.

In 1850, there was no people living alone in the 17-26 and 27-36 groups. Besides, the proportion of this kind of people aged 37-46 and 47-54 years old were same, at just over 2%, compared to a slightly higher that of the oldest group. In 1990, a new age group appeared, 27-36 years old and it’s rate of living alone stood at approximately 2%. While the figure of 37-46 still remained, the percentage of 47-54 and 55-64 people who lived alone experienced a little enhance to about 3% and nearly 4% respectively.

In 1950, there were full figure of 5 age groups. Nearly 2% of the US people from 17 to 26 lived alone, whereas the figure for three following age periods were unchanged. In contrast, the rate of residents aged 55-64 witnessed a considerably increasing pattern to around 9%. In 2000, the figure of all five age groups doubled, specially 8% for 27-36, about 13% for 47-54 and 17% for 55-64 – the highest point shown in the graph.
