The given pie charts compare the expenditure of American citizens on seven different items in 1966 and 1996.

Overall, Americans spent considerably more on cars and food compared to other items in both years. Nevertheless, Americans' expenses changed significantly from 1966 to 1996.

In 1966, Americans spent most of their budget on two items. Food was the highest expenditure, at 44%, followed by cars, at 23%. In contrast, people spent significantly less on other items. They spent 10% of their money on furniture, 9% on petrol and 7% on restaurants. It is also worth mentioning that books, with 6% and computers, with only 1% were the least expenses in that year.

In the year 1996, the proportions of expenditures altered dramatically. While the proportions of cars and restaurants almost doubled to 45% and 14% respectively, food and books dropped to consist 14% and only 1% of total expenditures. The most significant increase was in computers sector, on which Americans spent ten times more compared to 1966. Furthermore, the proportions of petrol and furniture marginally decreased and were relatively the same in both years.
