The chart shows how fertility rates varied between China and the USA during a 80-year period from 1920 to 2000.
Generally, the percentage of child birth in both countries followed a downward trend over this period. In comparison with the USA, the birth rates of China were larger in most years, apart from 1935 and 1950, when those of the USA exceeded China’s.
In terms of China, the birth rates fluctuated around 12 percent in the first 20 years before falling sharply to hit a bottom of nearly 5 percent in 1945. Following that, the figures recovered remarkably from 1945 to 1950, peaking at 15 percent in 1950. Since then, the rates of China babies born have fallen gradually to about 7 percent in 2000.
Regarding the USA, the percentage of child birth rose steadily from more than 10 percent in 1920 to 15 percent in 1935, apart from a slight decline of approximately 2 percent between 1925 and 1930. After plummeting to 5 percent in 1940, the figure remained stable in the next 5 years. Although the USA’s birth rates experienced a surge from 1945 to 1950 and reached a spike of 20 percent, the figures dropped gradually during subsequent years, bottoming out at about 2 percent in 2000.
