The line graph, which is from 2008 survey, outlines the usage of energy in the United States since 1980 and also the projections until 2030.
Overall, the trends in energy consumption have remained pretty consistent, and are expected to do so in the future. Petrol and oil, coal and natural gas are expected to remain the top three types of fuel s consumed, whereas nuclear, solar/wind and hydro-power will remain in the bottom tier.
In the 1980, production of energy from petrol and oil was 35 quadrillion units, which showed fluctuation throughout next decade and a half until 1995, after which it has been on a constant rise and is predicted to reach about 50 quadrillion units by 2030. The natural gas and coal were second and third most used fuel resource in the 1980, but they also showed fluctuation along with steady rise in consumption. Hence, in the future, the coal is supposed to overtake natural gas with about 28 quadrillion units consumption, compared to 20 quadrillion of gas.
The sustainable fuels were always the least preferred, as they were below 5 quadrillion units consumption mark in 1980 and throughout the next few decades. Similarly, they are expected to remain the least used method until 2030, with hydro-power consumption being a mere 2.5 quadrillion units, approximately.
