The chart compares the differences between the rates of immigration, emigration and net migration in Britain during a 9-year-period between 1999 and 2008.

Overall, it is clear that both immigration and emigration rates witnessed a general increase; whereas the former was significantly higher than the latter. Meanwhile, the net migration rate fluctuated sharply during the time shown. Units are measured in thousands of people.

In 1999, the number of people came and lived in the UK was at around 450 thousand people, 150 thousand more than the number of citizens leaving the country. The net migration rate stood at about 180 thousand people, then it remained so until peaking at nearly 250 thousand people in 2004. Between 1999 to 2004, the number of people immigrated witnessed a rise of about 250 thousand people; while the figure for emigration remained steadily.

After 2004, the immigration rate fell slightly to just approximately 590 thousand people in the end. It was followed by over 410 thousand people emigrated in 2008. The figure for net migration then dropped to at around 180 thousand people in 2008 despite a high peak of approximately 210 thousand people in the previous year.
