The graph below gives information about the number of jobs in four sectors of the
economy in the US between 1960 and 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant.
The line graph compares how many jobs were available in four economic sectors in the US over a 60-year period, starting from 1960. Units are measured in millions.
Overall, while retail and healthcare sectors experienced dramatic increases, the opposite was true for manufacturing and agriculture sectors. Interestingly, manufacturing offered the most job opportunities in most of the period despite its final drop, whereas agriculture sector stayed at the bottom of the chart after 1980.
Regarding the figures for retail and healthcare, the former stood at just over 5 million and the latter was at around 2 million in 1960, both of which rose significantly over the whole period. Specifically, between 2000 and 2020, these figures overtook the manufacturing sector in number which was the leading one until then. By the final year, retail and healthcare had reached their peak of over 15 million, sharing the same spot.
As for the other two sectors, the number of jobs in manufacturing, the leading one, was 15 million when agriculture had the same number of jobs as retail. Over the next two decades, while there was a sharp increase of 5 million in manufacturing, reaching the highest point in the graph, agriculture noticeably decreased in number by about 2 million. Subsequently, the former went down considerably to around 13 million, the latter almost remained stable at approximately 3 million, offering the least number of available jobs.
