The graph illustrates the proportion of citizens in four different Asian countries from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Overall, the city demographics rate of Malaysia and Indonesia experienced the most significant increase, while the population in cities of the Philippines and Thailand rose slightly over the period.
In 1970, 30% of Malaysians lived in cities. This figure climbed to 45% in 1990 before witnessing a substantial rise to 75% and will be up to 80% and 85% in 2030 and 2040, respectively. There were less than 15% of people living in cities in Indonesia in 1970. This figure surprisingly increased to half of all Filipinos in 2020. The number will still have risen to more than 60% by 2040.
The population rate in Philippine cities was more than 30%, which was the highest in 1970. This figure reached a peak of 50% in 1990. From then on, however, it decreased steadily to the level of 40% in 2010 before having risen to nearly 45% by 2020. The number of citizens in the Philippines will gradually increase up to 50% again in 2040. There was nearly 20% of the population lived in cities in Thailand and grew constantly to about 30% from 1970 to 2020 and will continuously increase to 40% and 45% in 2030 and 2040, separately.
