The given line graph compares the average emissions of carbon dioxide per capita in four European countries within a time span of forty years from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, it is clear that the UK produced the biggest amount of CO2 per person of all four nations over the survey period, despite the fact that levels fell slightly. Furthermore emission dropped significantly in Sweden while levels rose in Italy and Portugal.
In 1967 the UK emitted around 11 metric tonnes per person, although this values decreased gradually over the time, the UK remained the biggest polluter with 9 tonnes in 2007. We can see a different picture when it comes to Sweden. In the first decade there was increase which led to emission of over 10 tonnes per capita, and over the next decade it fell drastically. A downward trend continued in Sweden and in final year they had the same CO2 output as Portuguese. (around 5 tonnes per person)
In contrast, there were noticeable increases in the CO2 emitted by Italians and Portuguese over the four decades. Italy’s figure almost doubled, making it the second highest emitter by 2007 while Portugal’s figure rose even more dramatically from 1 metric tonne to about 5 tonnes per person.
