the charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.

Given pie charts compare the proportion of British university pupils who had the ability of speaking other languages besides English within a time span of 10 years.

Overall, during the decade, a considerable proportion of students were fluent in Spanish, while the least portion of students spoke German.

First and foremost, the rate of students who were not able to speak other languages then their native language, significantly dropped to a half throughout the survey period. Despite the decline of the monolingual English students, French speaking quota went down from 15 to 10 percent.

As we can see, Spanish was the most popular language among British students in both years, and rose from 30 to 35 percent. The same positive trend could be spotted when it comes to pupils who knew another language and two other languages apart from English.

It is interesting to note steadiness of German speaking quota, which remained 10 percent during this period.
