The graph below shows the average number of UK commuters traveling each day by car, bus or train between 1970 and 2030.
The line graph gives information about the number of British people commuting to work by three particular means of transportation in their daily life from 1970 to 2023.
In general, it can be seen that cars and trains have an upward trend, while fewer people travel to work by bus during the period.
At the beginning of the period, 5,5 million people commuted to work by car, and two million fewer people used the bus than cars. UK residents traveling to work by train in 1975 made up 2,5 million after gradually increasing to 3 million in 2010. Bus experienced a slight drop, at over 3 million commuters. The figure for using cars rose and later significantly increased to 7 million in 2010.
Commuting by train is expected to outlook the number of people using buses, which is forecasted to drop gradually to reach its lowest point at slightly less than 3 million commuters. Over the period of prediction, the number of people using cars to work will rise to a peak of 9 million in 2030.
