The graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.
The line graph compares the average oil price per barrel and the food price index over a period of 11 years.
It is clear that the global food and oil prices increased significantly between 2000 and 2011. The trends for both commodities are so strong, and a correlation (93.6%) was suggested.
In 2000, the average oil price stood at around $30 per barrel, and the food price index was about 90 points. Over the following four years, these prices remain relatively stable, before rising steadily between 2004 and 2007. By 2007, the oil price doubled, at nearly $60 per barrel, and the food price increased by around 40 points.
From 2007 to 2008, there were considerable increases in prices of two commodities, with the oil price reached its peak, at over $130 per barrel, and the food price stood at 220 points. However, at the beginning of 2009, these figures dropped dramatically to 140 points for food price and about $40 per barrel for oil price. Finally, in 2011, these prices rose once again, the food price index reached a peak of roughly 240 points and the average oil price was approximately $100 per barrel.
