The graph below shows the changes in UK birth rate of women in 6 different age groups from 1973 to 2008.

The line graph compares the birth rate of women in the UK in six age groups between 1973 and 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that there were significant increase in birth rate among women aged 30-35 and women aged 35-39, whereas birth rate in the under 20, 20-25, 25-29 and over 40 age groups saw substantial falls during the period.

In 1973, the highest number of births - 140 per 1000 people - was recorded among women in the 25-29 years old. The birth rate in this age group saw a fluctuating decrease to 120 in 2008. Similarly, birth rate of women under 20, from 20 to 25 and over 40 showed downward trends. There were 60 births per 1000 people for women aged under 20 in 1973, compared to above 120 and 20 for the 20-25 and over 40 age groups, respectively. The figure for women who are over 40 years old gradually fell to about 10. There was a decline to 40 in the under 20 age group, much lower than the final figure for the 25-29 years old, about 95.

In contrast, birth rate of women in the 30-35 and 35-39 age groups rose considerably over the period. There were 40 and more than 70 births per 1000 people in the age group of 35-39 and 30-35, respectively. The figure for the 35-39 years old women then rose and remained stable at around 65 at the end of the period, compared to approximately 85 for the 30-35 age group.
