The line chart illustrates the proportion of workers who work for themselves, out of all employees in five countries, in 1998 and 2000.
It is true that the number of people having an interest in entrepreneurship in Greece and Turkey was much higher than in Russia, Slovakia and Czech Republic. Furthermore, the percentage of self-employed workers in Turkey was highest in both years.
The proportions of entrepreneurship in Russia in 1998 and 2000 were the lowest, which were compared with the remaining four countries. It was 5% in 1998 and rose by around 2% in two years. The number of people owning their business in Czech Republic saw a similar growth to 15% in 2000. Meanwhile, the figure of Slovakia experienced a double increase from 6% in 1998 to 12% in 2000.
While workers of Russia, Czech Republic and Slovakia increasingly preferred self-employment, these in Greece and Turkey tended to decrease over the period shown. In 1998, the data of entrepreneurship in Greece was 42%; however, it dropped by around 7% to 35% in 2000. It was the similar decline from 56% to 39% in Turkey, which is the country having the largest percentage of self-employed people in two years shown.
