The following graph illustrates the percentage of three distinctive countries’ population who were 65 and over during a century from 1940 to 2040.
As can be clearly observed from the graph, three different countries of Japan, USA, and Sweden are surveyed. First of all, USA had the highest percentage by near 10% in 1940, it increased significantly to 15% till 1980. The proportion of American people who were 65 and over experienced a gradual decline until 2020, while the projection shows a dramatic rise to about 25% in 2040. Turning to Sweden, it initiated around 7% in 1940, then went up significantly to 15% by 1970. After a slight decline to 13%, the pattern followed a dramatic climb to about 20% in 2020. Although in will decrease during next decade, the final percentage will be nearly 25% by 2040.
Regarding Japan, unlike Sweden and USA, the people of Japan who aged 65 and over witnessed a remarkable fall from 5% in 1940 to 3% in 1980. From 1990 onward, there was a sharp rise and it almost doubled (10%). By 2040, figure will become more than 25%.
Overall, it is clear from the graph that, whereas Japan had far less 65 aged and over population than USA and Sweden until 2020, the project depicts that the increase of aging in Japan will be far sharper and by 2040 it will exceed both USA and Sweden.
