The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line chart illustrates the percentage of the population aged 65 and over from 1940 to 2040 in Japan, Sweden and the USA.
Looking at the information more detail, we can see that Sweden and the USA seem to have a similar trend from the beginning of 1940 until the end of the 1990s. In 1994, approximately 7% of male and female aged 65 and over while just under 10% in the USA. This uptrend increased constantly by 1980s before and decreased slightly in the next decade. Sweden experienced fluctuation after the 1980s and has been predicted the percentage of elderly will reach just over 25% in 2040s. By contrast, from the beginning of 21 century, the USA reach a plateau period in the next two decades and has been expected the proportion of elderly will increase significantly at the end of the 2040s at nearly 23%.
On the other hand, Japan indicates a completely different trend compared to the other two nations. The figure started at 5% in the 1940s and a slight fall occurred by the end of 1980s. After that, the figure increased all the way in the 2030s and is predicted it will rise dramatically at the end of 2040s (about 27%).
Overall, it is clear that although in some period the percentage of elderly dropped, it is an increasing tend at the end of the period especially the change in Japan.
