The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant
The graph displays the numbers of goods shifted in the UK during the period of 28-year from 1974 to 2002 by four means of transport.
Overall, what standing out from the graph is that road transport was the most popular mode to be used throughout the period. Meanwhile, transportation using pipeline was the least usage among four studied methods. Besides, merchandises delivered by water vehicles and railway were relatively in high demand.
With regards to road transport, its figure was the highest from the beginning with solid 70 million tons then saw an inconsistent upward and downward trend until 1995, the quantities of goods transported soared to 98 million tons. Afterwards, the direction gradually slowed down and only reached 1 more million ton in the end of the period. As mentioned above, although pipeline transport was not a popular mode, the data witnessed a slightly stable rise which started by roughly from 4 to 21 million tons during 21 years between 1974 and 1995. Since then, the number had not experienced any changes.
Turning to the remaining modes, they started the period with almost same quantities and after four years, the numbers were absolutely equal at 40 million tons. However, while water transport slumped in 1981 to 58 million tons after a rise slope and dropped to 51 million tons in 1998 but later had a significant recovery in the last year with 68. In contrast, transportation by train fell heavily in 1995 to only 27 million tons of goods and finally jumped to the starting point as 41 million tons.
