The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph illustrates the number of tonnes transported by four different modes of transport namely road, water, rail, and pipeline from 1974 to 2002. Overall, there was an upward trend in the number of tonnes via four ways. The highest number of tonnes was delivered by road over the period of nearly 30 years.
In the beginning, road was the most common way to transport goods, at 70 million while the opposite was true for the pipeline, at just 5 million. Even though the number of tonnes carried in road increased to around 100 million in the end, this number experienced some decline from 1978 to 1982 and 1990 to 1994. The figure for tonnes transported in pipeline witnessed the gradual rise to over 20 million in 1994, then remaining stable during the next 8 years.
Having the same number in beginning, at nearly 40 million, there were differences in the number of goods moved through water and rail. While the former climbed to over 60 million tonnes, the latter went down marginally before recovering to the initial point in 2002
