The chart illustrates shifts in the number of products delivered in the UK by four types: road, water, rail, and pipeline from 1974 to 2002.
It is apparent that all kinds of transport increased, despite some fluctuations. In addition, goods carried out by road and water transport were dominant throughout this period, and the figure for pipeline transport remains at least.
Moving to a more detailed analysis, in 1974, 70 million tonnes of goods were delivered by road transport, followed by rail and water transport, at around 40 million tonnes. At the same time, pipeline transport was not in vogue, so the quantities of goods transported by this model were a mere 5 tonnes. Then, there was a slight increase to 75 million tonnes in 1978 but later fluctuated during this period, standing at approximately 100 million tonnes in 2002.
In terms of water transport, in 1982 witnessed a dramatic rise to nearly 60 million tonnes and this figure declined slightly by around 5 tonnes before standing at 65 million tonnes in 2002, surpassing rail transport in the later year 1978. In addition, the number of products delivered by rail transport fell considerably to 25 million tonnes in 1998 and came back to the same level as the year 1974. Finally, there was a significant jump to 21 million tonnes in 2002.
