The graph below shows the rate of women's literacy and population growth in selected countries from 1988 to 2000.
A glance at the graph provided reveals a negative correlation between the proportion of female literacy and population growth rate in various countries from 1988 to 2000.
Specifically, the top five nations with the highest percentage of women's literacy had by far lower levels of population growth. With 96% literate women, Thailand and Colombia shared their population growth rates of mere 1.4% and 1.8%, respectively. Likewise, with levels of female literacy ranging from 84% to 90%, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Sri Lanka had population growth rates of just under 2%.
In stark contrast, the remainder five countries suffering from low rates of literacy for women showed markedly high figures for population growth. Especially, having a negligible 9% of women knowing how to read and write, Afghanistan's population increases at the highest rate among listed countries, namely 4.5%. Similarly, all the other countries had their population rates of well above 2.9%, with staggering low women's literacy levels, at between 8% and 21%.
