The line graph compares figures for spending by Americans per capita on four types of meats between 1955 and 2012.
It is clear that the consumption of beef was by far the most prevalent at any time in United State. However, the number of broilers consumed per person each year living in the US saw a significant growth, which eventually surpassed beef consumption.
In 1955, around 60 pounds of the expenses were on beef, and this data was 10 pounds higher than the expenses on pork, with approximately 50 pounds. Whereas there was a moderate rise in expenditure on beef over the following 20 years, those on turkey leveled off, with below 10 pounds per capita per year. Besides, the amount of beef consumed by Americans soared and peaked at 90 pounds in the year 1976.
By 2012, there had been a surge to nearly 50 pounds in the per capita consumption of broilers, which had indicated an equal figure to the consumption of beef. In contrast, US pork and turkey consumption had not seen any steep changes throughout the given period, at just under 40 pounds and 10 pounds respectively.
