The graph below shows trends in US meat and poultry consumption.
The line chart compares the per capita consumption of beef, pork, broilers and turkey (in pounds) in the United States from 1955 to 2012.
Overall, American people prefer red meat to poultry for a long time, and this trend changed at the end of the periods.
Between 1955 and 1995, US beef increased quickly from 60 pounds to reach a peak of 90 pounds in 1977, before decreased continuously to around 65 pounds. During this time, while the number of pork fluctuated between 50 and 40 pounds, consume of broilers rose rapidly from 15 pounds (1961) to the same figures of the pork (1995). Besides, US turkey, which the least popular meat, went up slightly from 5 pounds (1961) to just over 10 pounds (2012).
From 1995 to 2012, US beef and pork reduced slowly from 65, 50 pounds to 50, 45 pounds, respectively. Besides, we saw the dramatic rise in the number of broilers which surpassed the figure of the pork (1996) to reach a peak of 60 pounds (2006). Although this number slightly decreased to around 55 pounds, it was still the highest point (2012).
