The line graph compares the total expenditure on books in four countries over a period of ten years.
Overall, it is evident that Germans spent the most money on books throughout the entire period. However, it was Austria that enjoyed the highest rise in total book sale revenue during the 10 years.
In 1995, Germany had the highest total expenditure on books, at 80 million USD. France and Italy saw spending figures of approximately 55 million USD, whereas Austrians only spent 30 million USD on books. Between 1995 and 1997, while the other countries witnessed a rise in the amount of money spent on books, France's figures fell, from 55 million USD to only 50 million USD.
From 1999 to 2003, Germany was the only country to experience a decline in book sale revenue, sliding from 90 million to just 85 million USD. Austria overtook Italy in book sales in 2003, pushing Italy to last place among the four surveyed countries, and eventually reached a peak of 70 million USD in 2005. France's total book expenditure rose slightly during the final six years of the period, ending the period at 75 million USD.
