Essay topics:

The graph shows the number of marriages and divorces in the UK between 1975 and 2000.

A glance at the graph provided reveals the differences in the figures for marriages and divorces over a 25-year period, from 1975 to 2000.

Overall, there was an upward trend in the figures for the total, second marriages and divorces while the number of first marriages witnessed a downward trend over the given period. As is shown in the graph, the number of the former saw a growth whereas the rate of the latter experienced a reduction.

When it comes to the proportion of first marriages, it can be clearly seen that it recorded a slight acceleration from 320,000 to over 400,000 over a decade. This was followed by a significant shrink to over 300,000 in the next 15 years.

By contrast, the trend for the total, second marriages and divorces was in reverse. From 1975 to 1985, there was a considerable soar in the number of total, second marriages and divorces respectively to 640,000; 210,000 and 200,000. After a 10-year period of a marked surge, the quantity of total marriages plunged to approximately 580,000 apart from a fluctuation around 610,000. At the same time, in spite of a slight decrease, second marriages underwent a considerable leap by 250,000 as there were about 246,000 divorces after it saw a minimal acceleration.
