The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in 3 different countries.
The given graph summarizes information about the percentage of people over the age of 65 in Japan, Sweden, and the USA during the 100-year period from 1940 to 2040. Overall, in all of the 3 countries mentioned, there will have been an upward trend in the proportion of older people.
Throughout the first 40 years, from 1940 to 1980, there was a similar increasing tendency in the ratio of old citizens in both Sweden and the USA, which went from over 5% to 14%, and 9% to 15%, respectively. From 1980 to the end of the 2020s, the old population rate in Sweden will have fluctuated in an upward direction from around 14% to below 20%, whereas the ratio in the USA will have been more stable to drop a little and then rise to over 15%. From then on, the 2 figures will continue to grow to 25% and 24%, respectively.
Japan, however, experienced a decrease in aged 65 and over population proportion in the first 20 years to only around 3%. The figure then remained the same until around the end of the 1980s. Subsequently, to the end of the 2020s, the percentage will have continued to rise steadily to 10%, and then will soar almost vertically to reach the rate of 25% in the 2030s. In 2040, the ratio will peak at around 26%.
