The graph shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
According to the graph given, it is possible to observe the evolution of the proportion of the population aged over 65 years in three different countries (EUA, Sweden and Japan) from 1940 to 2040. In the beginning, USA was from the 3 countries the one with the biggest proportion of an aged population with around 9%, while Sweden had around 7% and Japan only 5%. The years that followed, showed a different pattern, but the same outcome (2040) for both countries, an increase in aged population (%). Firstly, Japan decreased the aged population to nearly 3% until 1980´s, but after that has increased exponentially and it is expected to reach the values of 27% in 2040. Sweden on the other hand, had a different path, always following a regular pattern with long periods of increase and other small periods of drawbacks. It is expected in 2040 that 25% of its population will have 65 or more years. Finally, USA had a similar path to Sweden, with periods of increase and decrease in the % of the population with 65 years or over, but in smaller variations, resulting in a prevision of only 23%.
To conclude, it is important to mention that even though both countries are expected to increase their aged population, USA shows up as the country with the smallest %, while Japan the highest inverting the results in 1940.
