The graph illustrates the number of overseas students and local students in Australian universities from 2001 to 2010.
Overall, there was a rise of overseas students while there was a fluctuate in the number of local students by commencing. Moreover, the total in both sides increased but the figure of overseas students was higher.
First of all, in 2001, 10000 overseas students signed to study in Australian universities by commencing then increased gradually by double in 6 years later. Secondly, this figure reached a peak at 400000 pupils in 2009 before maintaining it in the next year.
On the other hand, at first, local students studied in Australian universities by commencing were higher than overseas students by 9000 people and rose slightly up to 230000 students. Furthermore, the figure for local students fall gradually to approximately about 190000 people between 2003 and 2006. There was a small growth in the number of local students to over 200000 in 2008 then continued to decrease to 20000 students in 2010. Lastly, the total number of local students rose sharply to 600000 people in 2001 to 2007 then unchanged this number in 4 years later, while there was a dramatic increase in overseas students, which took the highest number to 800000 students in 2010.
