The graphs compares the consuming habits of people in UK in 1971 and 2001.

It is clear that overall spending on essentials decreased considerably from 1971 to 2001. While nearly half of people’s income were spent on food in 1971, a clear majority of money was paid for cars in 2001.

Looking at the information in more detail, we can see that 44% of the English people’s money were used to buy food in 1971. Expenses on this part only made up 14% of the total spending in 2001. By contrast, English people spent on restaurants twice as much as before in 2001. The cost of furniture fell slightly by 1% during these years.

With regard to non-essentials, spending on cars accounted for only 22% of the total expenditure of people in England, accompanied by cost for petrol occupying 10% in 1971. The figure for cars almost doubled to 43% and the percentage of petrol decreased to 8% in 2001. As for cultural expenditure, English people spent merely 6% and 2% of their income on books and computers in 1971. Spending on computers increased tenfold to12% while the percentage of books fell respectively to 1% in 2001.
