Line-price changes
The line graph compares the changes in the price of three different food categories and the consumer-price index (CPI) in the US, over a period of 30 years, from 1978 to 2009.
Overall, the prices and the CPI increased over the period. Although the general trend was upwards, the prices for fresh fruits and vegetables were by far much higher than the CPI, while those for sugar and sweets, and carbonated drinks, were generally lower.
At the beginning of the period, the prices for all categories were almost the same, starting between 60 and 70. In the following decade, the prices slightly fluctuated. Although the prices, in general, increased to above 100 by the year of 1987, there were not much difference between every group of food, and in comparison with CPI, in this period.
From 1987 to 2009, the data showed more discrepancies between the prices of food groups. To elaborate, fresh fruits and vegetable prices overtook the CPI and the other two groups’ prices, and increased significantly throughout the period to roughly 330 by 2209. In contrast, even though the change pattern in prices of sweets and sugar and carbonated drinks saw a gradual increase, the prices were below the CPI figure which rose to above 200 by the year of 2009. Sugar and sweets, and carbonated drinks prices increased to 150 and 100, about ½ and 1/3 of that number of fresh fruits and vegetable, respectively.
