Now-a-days many people choose to be self-employed, rather than work for a company.

Why might this be the case?

What could be the disadvantage of being self-employed?

Nowadays we live in a global village, and we can contact any person lived in any part of the world in just a single click. Self-employment has been increasing at the rapid speed since last few years even though it has a few drawbacks. This essay will explain what the reasons for this fast change are and will also discuss the demerits of self-employments.

Every person wants to be the boss of his fate, and always has zeal to earn for himself by doing something independently. There are various reason for this type thinking. Firstly, in an organization, employees have to abide by the rules of the organization even though those rules may be liked by employees. For instance, in India, job holders must work minimum eight hours per day that can difficult for some person. Secondly, while work pressure could be another annoying reasons for staffs, the threatening for superior for not achieving targets makes the situation worse. However, a self-employed person makes his own rules, own objectives and own definition of work pressure. For instance, a doctor, a layers have their own financial need and hence work in a different ways; some works for 8 hours a day, while other works only 4 hours a day. Lastly, the efforts put by an employee to solve one task may be under monetary valuation, i.e. he is underpaid. Had he/she done similar effort on some individual work, he/she could have earn more remuneration. For example, the ethical hackers are paid as per their demand and ability. Had he been work in an organization, we would have drawn a limited salary, much lesser than his capability.

However, plethora of benefits are provided by companies to its employees to have cordial relationships in the organization, such as medical benefits, paid holidays and pension scheme. The earning of a self-employed person will be null if he/she fall sick. There would be no pension scheme for him after retirement, and must be depend on his own saving. But, in this today’s world, these issues can be well manageable if the self-employed person plans properly beforehand.

In conclusion, self-employment is increasing in today's modern society because self-employed can earn handsome amount on his own effort, and targets and pressure can be his own set. However, demerits like non availability of free medical benefits, pension scheme and paid holidays could be major setback of self-employment.
