People living alone in the USA
The graph compares the proportion of citizens living alone in the USA from 1850 to 2000 in the various age groups.
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of the population living alone increased during the period in all age groups. Besides, the highest proportion of people who lived alone was in the 55-64 year-olds.
In 1850, the figure for people living alone was given. Just about 2% of people aged 37-46 and 47-54 lived alone, less than 3% of those aged 55-64. In 1990, the percentage of people who lived alone in the 37-46 age group remained stable while this figure for those in 47-54 and 55-64 age group slightly rose, compared with just only 2% of people living alone by the 27-36 year-olds.
A new pattern column appeared in 1950 with a small increase in the percentage of the population who lived alone. This figures for those continued rises by 2000. The percentage of people living alone was 8% in 27-36 age groups and doubled in 55-64 year-olds. The proportion of people who lived alone in 17-26 and 37-46 year-olds was 5% and 7% respectively, compared with 13% of those who aged 47-54.
