Overall, the sale of adult fiction and children’s fiction registered an upward trend, while that of biography and others declined over the period. In addition, this figure for travel’s book experienced a fluctuation.
As the data showed, the year 1972 was the year that the share of adult fiction, children’s fiction and biography were equal ( at 20%). Both adult and children’s fiction then increased significantly to 45 and 25% over the following 40 years. The opposite trend can be seen when we look at the sale of biography; this figure fell by 5% in 1992 before dropping to the lowest point in the year, just 8%.
Regarding the percentage of travel and other books sold by a bookseller, these figures started at 15 and 25% respectively. After that, the sale of travel witnessed a slight growth, increasing by just 3% in 1992 before declining to 10% in the latest year. As for others, this statistic saw a downward trend, ending with 12%, which was half of that in 1972.
