In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.To what extent do you agree or disagree

Nowadays, obesity is becoming a huge problem in many Western countries leading to an increase in cardiovascular complications, diabetes and other diseases. Among the causes the consumption of junk food and soft sweetened drinks is prominent, especially in the United States where more than 30 percent of the population is obese. In order to face this issue, some experts have suggested that government should introduce a higher tax on fast food. Although this way of acting could lead to some apparent benefits, I think that a deeper consciousness of the problem has to be reached.

Firstly, in doing so, politicians might limit the consumption of products from companies such as McDonald's, which would have to increase the prices of its meals in order to cope with the new financial imposition. For example, considering some previous healthcare policies of governments, tobacco taxes have surely limited the use of cigarettes reducing the risks associated to smoking.

However, I think that social factors connected to the availability of food and obesity have to be discussed. In fact, a careful analysis of the phenomenon in US reveals that healthy meals are much more expensive than unhealthy ones. This means that fruit and vegetables are affordable for rich people but for whoever has a lower income is not the same. The poor in America do not prefer to eat hamburgers and chips but they simply need them.

To conclude, I partially agree with what is said by the experts since the larger financial strain proposed may be helpful only for a certain class of the population. Instead, adopting policies of regulation on food quality and laws promoting a lower cost of healthy food seems to me a better solution.
