Surveys conducted in 1982 and 2002 show different pictures of what motivate students to choose a college or university in the UK.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The pie charts compare the results of a survey of the factors British students considered when choosing a university in two different years.
Overall, U.K. students placed the greatest value on suitable courses and degrees than on other factors in the two years. The importance of amenities, social activities and sports facilities, and college reputation, witnessed a dramatic rise, while the weight of other factors decreased or remained essentially unchanged over the 17-year period.
The availability of suitable courses and degrees was the most influential consideration in both years, although the the percentage of students who cited this reason declined by 6% as compared with 40% in 1982. In terms of costs, only a small fraction (5%) of students weighed the factor before making their choices, but the proportion climbed to 28%, becoming the second most crucial determinants in 1982. Besides, closeness to parental home was an attractive advantage to 16% of respondents, despite a moderate decline of 3% from 1982.
Different trends were seen in other factors. There was significantly growing concern about reputation of the university, which increased fivefold to a quarter through two decades, in contrast to only 5% in 1982. The factor of amenities, social activities and facilities followed a similar pattern: the proportion of respondents valuing it tripled from 5% from 1982 to almost one-fifth(18%). By comparison, admission criteria mattered the least in both years ( chosen by 2% and 3% respectively in these two years).
